Job Description:

Our client, in Roanoke, VA, is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to add to their team! This individual will design, implement, and support all Windows Operating System platforms to provide data storage, printing, email, internet services, database platforms, retail store system platform, multi-tier application platforms, security framework, antivirus, patch management, development and lab systems to meet our client's business needs. You will also perform projects as related to the distributed computing environment, which will involve software and/or hardware engineering of integrated solutions. This is a full time, contract opportunity with a growing company.


  • Perform strategic analysis and design of network OS infrastructure and make recommendations on improvements and/or new systems required to meet our client's business needs.

  • Participate in the evaluation, purchase, and implementation of hardware, operating systems, and software using proven technologies such as RAID, fiber channel, clustering, load balancing, and redundant system designs in order to deliver services.

  • Current operating system knowledge should be maintained for support on Windows NT, 2000, 2003. Should also maintain knowledge in the areas of new server market technologies for hardware, operating systems, and management software.

  • Serve as a technical resource for Business Units, Store Systems, and other groups in system/network design and integration.

  • Lead the coordination of activities between multiple disciplines within MIS and vendors on both technical and non-technical issues pertaining to computer system hardware and software, network infrastructure, peripheral evaluation and integration.

  • Maintain and enhance existing system, network and management utilities.

  • Provide mentoring when necessary to fellow team members to facilitate team effectiveness and support levels.

  • Provide 2nd level support to Desktop Team on Desktop Operating Systems and applications.

  • Responsible for server health through monitoring and routine maintenance.

  • Lead efforts to maintain system integrities by following patch management processes.

  • Lead server projects such as implementation of new systems and/or technologies and acts as project manager using the client's Project management tools.

  • Prepare and maintain documentation of network configurations.

Education Requirements:

  • Four-year degree. A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree or comparable job-related experience is required.

Desired Background/Skills:


    • Three to six years experience in systems engineering with at least twelve months at System Programmer position or equivalent/higher.

    • Structured Programming Language.

    • System Management.

    • Multiple Scripting Languages.

    • Network Communications.

    • Database Administration.

    • Proven ability to communicate with business users and technical staff.

    • Proven experience at handling multiple assignments and using strong prioritization skills.

    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

    • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

    • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

    • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of complex technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
