SUGAR Research Assistant (Part-time)

Job Description:

Our client, a global nonprofit research organization, has an immediate opening for a Research Assistant within the Substance Use, Gender, and Applied Research program. Specifically, the successful applicant will provide direct project managerial and research support on a North Carolina-based project working with young African American women seeking to reduce sexual risk behaviors through empowerment and skills-building. This position includes communicating with project field staff and health departments as needed, conducting quality assurance of project documents, visiting local project field sites, and conducting participant outreach when required. This position will provide the successful prospect the opportunity to expand their knowledge of multidisciplinary research that seeks to reduce substance use, HIV infection, and risk behaviors; and promote treatment effectiveness and compliance. The Research Assistant will gain experience in supporting project and communications activities, management of internal data and information, as well as insight into the business development and communications processes within a large international organization. This position is a part-time (20-30 hours per week) three-month contract position with possibility of extension located in RTP, NC.


  • Project management support of woman-focused HIV prevention projects

  • Communicating with and managing project field staff

  • Quality assurance tasks on project documents

  • Field site visits and outreach when required

  • Report writing, preparation for project meetings, maintaining organization of files

  • Data cleaning of project databases

  • Simple quantitative/qualitative data analysis

  • Support on proposal and research project development

  • Draft writing sections of grant proposals

  • Project manual development and Institutional Review Board submissions

  • Conduct literature reviews for research manuscripts

  • Prepare research manuscripts and presentations

  • Develop program newsletters, market studies to community, and create and enhance communication efforts of recent and/or preliminary findings of studies

  • Project management of program, project files, and Community Collaborative Board activities

  • Assist with other Global Gender Center tasks as needed

Education Requirements:

  • Recent Bachelor's degree recipient (within 1-2 calendar years after graduation)

    • Energy, enthusiasm, and passion to improve the lives of others

    • Strong interest and commitment to HIV prevention interventions among underserved populations domestically and internationally and addressing gender inequality issues

    • Qualitative data collection and analyses skills preferred

    • Exceptional communication and analytical skills

    • Ability to plan, anticipate and manage multiple tasks

    • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint) and the Internet

    • Experience with quantitative data collection and analysis software (e.g., SPSS, SAS, Stata) a plus

    • Great attention to detail and works well with others, willingness to be flexible
