Shift Mechanic

Job Description:

Our client, located in Durham, NC, is seeking a skilled Shift Mechanic to add to their team! This individual will be responsible for performing production activities as directed to achieve the most favorable production cost, quality, safety and workmanship. You will also be responsible for diagnosing and correcting common mechanical issues and escalating complex maintenance issues to the proper individuals in the organization. This is a full time, contract opportunity.


  • Perform any basic mechanical repairs that arise during the Production Shift (e.g. Change small motors, belts, gear-boxes, make machine adjustments, etc.) and request Maintenance assistance.

  • Additionally responsible for taking Boiler readings as mandated by OSHA and making control trips around the Plant and addressing any issues.

  • Wrapping Doffed Production Rolls including performing any required testing, labeling, packaging, and disposition activities.

  • Reset electrical breakers, reroute chip transfer pipes.

  • Cut all cores tubes to required lengths and make sure they have been staged for the shift's production needs.

  • Performs"Inspection" duties (inline visual inspection of product) and flag any and all visual defects in product.

  • Perform any required cleaning activities on the production line (TAC cleaning, Wipe Packs, Wipe Claps, etc.).

  • Assist Line Supervisor or Lead Production Operator with any required Winder adjustments.

  • Wrapping and Disposing of Bails that result from the accumulation of "edge trim" waste.

  • Assure compliance of shift crew with safety rules.

  • Report hazardous equipment or procedures.

  • Recommend improvements to maintain an accident free work area.

  • Ensure all housekeeping activities are completed by the end of each shift.

Education Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED with 1-2 years manufacturing experience.

Desired Background/Skills:

  • Preferred A.S. in a Technical Discipline or related field with 1 year manufacturing experience.

  • Certification in Rigging and/or Welding desired.


  • Basic knowledge of: compressed air systems, hydraulic systems, cooling water systems, fasteners, machine safety systems.

  • Basic math skills, i.e. calculating whole numbers, metrics, decimals and fractions.

  • Logical thinking/reasoning skills.

  • Mechanical aptitude -Basic computer skills (data entry and retrieval).

  • Strong verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to use ordinary arithmetic, specifications, charts, and schedules together with gauges, adjustable instruments and the like to perform and operate the line, change spinning packs, operate winder equivalent to high school with industrial arts training.

  • Able to work as member of a team in the effective operation of complex machinery and in a safe manner.

  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and written, with all levels of the organization.
