Senior Communications Specialist

Job Description:

Our client, a global non-profit research firm, has an immediate need for a Senior Communications Specialist. Within our client's International Development Group (IDG), their researchers and practitioners design and implement programs across a wide range of sectors to help low- and middle-income countries and communities address complex problems and improve the lives of their citizens. IDG's Learning, Energy, and Environment for Development (LEED) division is looking for an experienced communications professional eager to apply their talent to addressing pressing, global problems. This will be a full-time position for a minimum period of 4 months. It will be based in the Washington, D.C office.


  • Work collaboratively with LEED leadership to develop and implement their communications strategy that will increase the profile of LEED's contributions and expertise in support of business priorities

  • Work collaboratively with LEED leadership to develop and implement opportunity specific communications plans and events

  • In collaboration with the Communications Specialist and working with technical experts and project staff, develop and coordinate review of content including success stories, project feature stories, blogs, expert interviews, and brochures and other marketing material

  • Seek out new and creative approaches to showcase LEED's work with a particular emphasis on results in the field, including human interest and success stories

  • Support global events including conferences, workshops, webinars, panel presentations, receptions, social media events, briefings, etc

  • Assist with LEED executive and internal staff communications

  • Collaborate with communications colleagues and technical experts based across the department and company to leverage expertise and resources and achieve shared communications goals

  • Provide high level communications support for company-led, donor-funded projects to include: developing project communications strategies; developing print and digital content including success stories, brochures and other marketing material, and reports; event planning and support

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, international relations, political science, business administration, or a related field

Desired Background/Skills:

  • Short-term consulting experience and experience in international development is a plus

  • Experience managing communications activities on behalf of a trade association, think tank, PR agency, corporate communications office, or nonprofit organization preferred. USAID experience a plus


  • 8-10 years of related work experience

  • Self-starter, able to think creatively and work independently

  • Strategic thinker with proven ability to link communications activities to business strategy and goals

  • Ability to quickly conceptualize, understand and communicate complex concepts

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with strong attention to detail and the ability to accurately and concisely convey complex and technical information

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively and establish strong working relationships with key colleagues within internal departments

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment and carry out multiple activities and projects with competing deadlines

  • Excellent oral and written English language communication skills

  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed

  • This client is a U.S. government contractor with controlled-access facilities and must register non-U.S. Persons; therefore, all visitors to their facilities must declare their nationality and citizenship upon arrival at, and before entering their facilities. All candidates selected to interview will be required to complete 'Government Contractor Controlled-Access Facility Questionnaire' before visiting the client facility
