Senior Business Intelligence Analyst

Job Description:

Our client, a global non-profit, is seeking a Senior Business Intelligence Analyst to join their team. This person will be responsible for leading the design and support of enterprise-wide business intelligence applications and architecture including analyzing business needs and translating them into technology as well as process solutions. They will gather and analyze business requirements from internal customers, evaluate solution options, and develop recommendations in the form of functional specifications.


  • Work with Finance stakeholders to understand business needs and develop business acumen.

  • Develop and maintain deep business and IT domain expertise for area of responsibility.

  • Gather and analyze business requirements from stakeholders and, based on findings, design functional specifications for BI front-end applications.

  • Optimize the performance of enterprise business intelligence tools by defining data to filter and index that add value to the user.

  • Design and coordinate a curriculum for coaching and training customers in the use of business intelligence tools to enhance business decision-making capability.

  • Research new technology and develop business cases to support enterprise-wide business intelligence solutions.

  • Work closely with the Data Architect to design solutions in support of BI efforts.

  • Maintain strong knowledge of the data warehouse and reporting data models.

  • Serve as a thought leader and implementation strategist for BI systems that deliver meaningful and actionable information to key business personnel.

  • Design, develop and deliver a training curriculum to ensure end user success and promote use of the BI environment across the organization.

  • Mentor and coach junior staff and business users on Business Intelligence and reporting and data mining methodology.

  • Develop functional specifications in conjunction with technical staff including inputs, outputs, logic, and other details necessary to implement a solution.

  • Identify and separate needs for revamped or new business processes separate from technology solutions, and work with internal customers to create business processes.

  • Develop user acceptance test plan to validate the installed configuration and operation against detailed functional specifications, and review test results.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with peers in the course of developing solutions or solving problems.

  • Work projects through to completion while keeping project team members, stakeholders, vendors and ITS management informed of issues and overall status. May coordinate small projects as well.

  • Manage time utilization to ensure that tasks are completed on or ahead of schedule, and that issues are escalated to project or ITS management.

  • Maintain awareness of technology and industry trends sufficient to provide input to selection of technology solutions as well as development of tools and methodologies.

  • Troubleshoot BI tools, systems, and software.

  • Identify inefficiencies and gaps (data integrity, scalability, security, performance, manageability, etc.) in current BI environment and recommend solutions.

  • Act as evangelist for BI benefits across the organization; promote BI usage to relevant departments.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, IT, or related field and 10 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Excellent knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel.

  • General knowledge of or skill in software development methodologies.

  • General knowledge of or skills in developing system standards by applying industry knowledge to business needs by maintaining knowledge of information technology and research institute standards, which may include application, business intelligence, or database standards.

  • General knowledge of or skills in participating in planning, design, or implementation activities under the direction of project leaders while completing tasks in the prescribed time and reporting status or issues to project leaders.

  • General knowledge of or skills in identifying and documenting business needs, rules and functions following standard ITS processes, defining scope of work and obtaining end user department sign off.

  • General knowledge of or skills in the technology marketplace and direction for technologies relevant to one's areas of expertise or relevant to a specific set of project requirements.

  • General knowledge or skill in researching and evaluating vendor offerings either for products of services meeting business and/or technical requirements, developing vendor selection criteria and, in conjunction with others, developing final recommendation on offerings.

  • Basic knowledge of or skills in planning, designing, developing and documenting functional requirements, including the end users' view of the system, underlying data structures and system interfaces, supplying sufficient specifications to develop or purchase needed software and acquire a hardware platform.

  • General knowledge of or skills in coordinating projects providing scope definition, risk analysis, and status updates to appropriate parties, as well as leadership to the project team.

  • Strong knowledge of Cognos reporting or similar tool.
