Lab Research Associate

Job Description:

Our client, a global nonprofit research organization based in RTP, is seeking a Lab Research Associate to join their Technology, Advancement, & Commercialization unit with the Engineered Systems group. The role of the position includes the development of biomedical devices for Multipurpose Prevention Technology implants. Responsibilities include fabrication and characterization of medical device prototypes, performing measurements to characterize polymer materials, analyzing data, generating reports, and other duties to support senior research staff. The position is based at the main laboratories on the organization's campus in Research Triangle Park. All laboratory operations will be conducted in accordance with the organization's laboratory safety guidelines. This position is a 12 month contract role.


  • Fabricate medical device prototypes using established protocols

  • Work with controlled release systems, developing and performing in-vitro release studies in simulated biological environments

  • Perform measurements to characterize polymer materials and the release of drugs from the implants

  • Maintain detailed notes to share with project team

  • Assist in other laboratory duties to support senior research staff

Education Requirements:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, biomedical engineering, materials science, or related discipline with experience fabricating subcutaneous implants

  • One to three years of industrial experience is preferred; at least one year of research experience is required

Desired Background/Skills:

  • Experience with common analysis tools such as microscopy, thermal analysis, and spectroscopy is desirable


  • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills with working knowledge of biomedical devices

  • Highly interactive interpersonal skills for effective communication with project team members, various staff (including engineers, scientists, technicians, clients, vendors, etc)

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to successfully implement experimental test plans

  • Demonstrated ability to work equally well independently and as part of a larger team

  • Self-motivated individual with a strong attention to detail are required to efficiently complete tasks outlined in experimental test plans on schedule

  • Creative ability to solve problems that arise without compromising data quality

  • Must have experience with polymeric materials
