Job Description:

Our client, an international non-profit research organization located in RTP, is seeking to hire a Chemist I. This employee will be responsible for receiving, storing, analyzing and distributing new drug substances and products prior to their use in clinical and/or preclinical toxicological investigations. This position is a contract to hire position located in Research Triangle Park, NC.


  • Receive, store, analyze and distribute new drug substances and products prior to their use in clinical and/or preclinical toxicological investigations

  • Develop, validate and apply analytical methodologies for chemicals and pharmaceutical formulations using high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), and spectroscopic techniques (e.g., NMR or mass spectroscopy) to provide qualitative and quantitative information regarding molecular structure or composition and purity

  • Extract and purify chemical constituents from natural products for use in nonclinical and clinical studies using solvent or supercritical fluid extraction and preparative chromatography

  • Conduct smoking and vaporization studies of tobacco products, e-cigarettes and other inhaled drug substances

  • Operate in a regulated setting following cGMP/GLP requirements

  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory instrumentation

  • Write, revise and follow SOPs for instrumentation, design experiments, analyze data, and report results

Education Requirements:

  • BS/MS in Chemistry or a related science

  • At least 2-3 years of relevant experience in a pharmaceutical laboratory setting

  • Familiar with principles and use of techniques such as HPLC, FT-IR, UV-Vis, GC, TGA, microscopy, laser light scattering, partition coefficients, ionization constants, and other instrumentation used for physicochemical analysis

Desired Background/Skills:

  • Flexibility to work very occasional short weekend hours preferred

  • Knowledge of Empower software for processing data preferred


  • Ability to work independently and develop new skills with minimal supervision

  • Experience in a FDA regulated environment is desirable

  • Must have excellent documentation skills, organizational skills with particular attention to detail

  • Demonstrated communication skills

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, and a desire to learn and troubleshoot issues
