Job Description:
As an entry-level microbiologist, your job will be to work in a laboratory and use a variety of methods to test various microorganisms, collect data, and use analysis procedures to explain the results. Microbiologists typically focus on science and research, but as an entry-level employee, your main job is to learn the various aspects of this job by supporting multiple studies. Entry-level microbiologists often clean and sterilize equipment, manage lab inventory, document information, take notes, collect environmental samples, and complete other tasks as assigned. . Pay rate: $20 - $25 Length of assignment: 1 year Schedule: 8am ? 5pm
Responsibilities:
Prepare buffers, reagents, and liquid/solid bacterial growth medium following SOPs.
Perform serial dilutions, prepare microbial cultures (e.g., plaque assays, spread plating for microbial counts, T-streaks for isolated colonies from frozen stocks, and filter plating), perform biochemical assays (e.g., ELISAs, endotoxin assays, glucan assays), and perform molecular assays (e.g., quantitative PCR).
Support laboratory staff in general lab operations such as cleaning, autoclaving, and washing and storing glassware and testing supplies, as assigned.
Support laboratory staff in data collection activities such as counting colonies on culture plates and preparing and providing data in excel spreadsheets from biochemical assays (e.g., ELISAs, endotoxin, & glucan assays).
Documentation of experiments and data, including proper lab notebook maintenance.
Comply with all lab safety requirements and procedures.
Inventories and restocks of reagents.
Help dispose of contaminated materials and equipment in accordance with policy.
Education Requirements:
Bachelors Degree in Microbiology or similar field
Desired Background/Skills:
Excellent communication skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced team setting
Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures, and attention to detail.
Qualifications:
Knowledge and/or experience in a laboratory environment, basic laboratory skills, and a solid scientific educational background (Bachelor's degree or higher) with laboratory coursework. Prefer previous experience handling and working with microbes (e.g., bacteria, viruses, and fungi) and performing molecular assays.
Basic knowledge of quality assurance and quality control principles.
Strong communication skills and willingness to learn.
Must be able to lift 10lbs with each hand and pick up to 50lbs.
Proficiency with using Microsoft Suite including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
Must be highly motivated, detail-oriented, and be able to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment.
Must be able to manage their own time effectively and balance working on multiple projects simultaneously.
