Laboratory Research Assistant

Job Description:

Our client, one of the world's leading research institutes, is seeking a full-time, contract Research Associate to join their research team. The role of the position includes laboratory-based research and development support across multiple projects within the Engineered Systems team. The Laboratory Research Assistant will gain broad knowledge and experience at the intersection of biomedical engineering, aerosol science, and human health. Responsibilities include conducting laboratory experiments and data collection, fabrication and characterization of prototype devices and instrumentation, characterizing materials properties, generating reports, and other duties to support research staff. This contract position will be full-time at RTI?s headquarters in Research Triangle Park, NC for an initial 12-month period. The pay rate for this position is $22.00/hourly.


  • Perform a variety of technical lab procedures such as preparing routine solutions and reagents and performing routine reactions.

  • Perform sample analysis using less complex instrumentation, e.g., mercury analyzers and ion chromatography.

  • Provide input on SOPs or authors SOPs specific to work activity.

  • Create and record laboratory observations.

Education Requirements:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in microbiology, chemistry, environmental science, materials science, or related science or engineering discipline.

  • Experience in laboratory experiments and data collection in of one or more areas of bench chemistry, microbiology, materials analysis, and/or analytical instrumentation.

Desired Background/Skills:

  • 1 to 3 years of industrial, laboratory and/or research experience is preferred.


  • Highly interactive interpersonal skills for effective communication with project team members and other personnel.

  • Ability to work equally well independently and as part of a larger team.

  • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to successfully implement experimental test plans and follow standard operating procedures to perform required measurements with high accuracy and precision.

  • Strong time management skills with ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience with common analysis tools such as microscopy, thermal analysis, and spectroscopy.

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office, especially Excel and creating macros.
