Design Manager

Job Description:

Our client, a leader in commercial furniture and interiors, is looking for a Design Manager to join their team! The Design Manager is ultimately responsible for the development and performance of the design team. This is a full time, direct hire position based in Raleigh, NC.


  • Coach and develop design team in creating workplace solutions, space planning and product selection.

  • Distribute and manage workflow among the team.

  • Identify gaps in skill set & implement necessary training plan(s).

  • Work with the Market Present and Sales team to provide design strategy on major accounts and opportunities by translating client business goals into workplace solutions.

  • Represent and facilitate design in major presentations for current and prospective customers by engaging to influence workplace design and lead the client to the most appropriate workplace solutions.

  • Communicate project activity in team strategy sessions to ensure appropriate design involvement.

  • Understand the market strategy to increase sales of top manufacturers.

  • Conduct performance reviews for design department.

  • Develop an annual business plan for the department (staffing needs, training opportunities, workflow improvements, etc).

  • Attend weekly meetings with all Department leads to ensure consistency and continuity in the market goals.

  • Conduct weekly department meetings.

  • Travel to other locations (Durham/Greensboro) a minimum of twice a month.

  • Ensure the team is meeting all internal and external deadlines.

  • Guarantee the accuracy of the team's work (ie avoidance of specification errors).

  • Oversee the quality of the Design Department's deliverables (ie level of renderings, floorplates, etc).

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Interior Design or Architecture from CIDA accredited institution

Desired Background/Skills:


    • Minimum of 8+ years design experience is required

    • Contract furniture industry knowledge required

    • Working knowledge of Herman Miller preferred Demonstrated proficiency with AutoCAD/Revit

    • Experience with specifying software such as Design Express, CAP 2020 or equivalent

    • Strong organizational skills

    • Strong communication skills and professionalism

    • Ability to perform all essential functions with or without accommodation
